The band of values a laboratory expects to see in most healthy people tested in the same way.

What is this?
A reference range (sometimes called a reference interval or, loosely, a normal range) is usually built by measuring a large group of people considered healthy and taking the middle portion of their results.
Because that middle portion deliberately excludes a small proportion of healthy people, a value slightly outside the range is common and often unremarkable.
Ranges are printed on your own report because they belong to that laboratory and that method. A range you find elsewhere may not apply to your result.
Why is it important?
It gives your result context, but it is a statistical band rather than a line between healthy and unhealthy.
Where you'll see it: Printed beside almost every numerical result on blood, urine and other laboratory reports.
How doctors use this result
Clinicians may use this result to:
- As a first prompt about where to look on a report.
- Alongside your symptoms, history, medication and other results.
- To compare a result with your own previous values, which is often more informative.
Does an abnormal result always mean something is wrong?
Not necessarily. A number that sits outside the printed range is a prompt for interpretation — not a diagnosis.
- A single result rarely gives the full picture — clinicians interpret it alongside your symptoms.
- Your medical history, medications and other blood tests all shape the meaning of one value.
- Small movements just outside the reference range are common and often not concerning.
- Repeat testing over time is frequently more useful than any single number.
What might happen next?
- Use the range printed on your own report rather than one from another source.
- Check the units, which must match the range.
- Ask the requesting service whether a value outside the range needs repeating.
One result rarely tells the whole story. Clinicians look at your symptoms, medical history, medications and other tests together — and a single value that sits slightly outside the reference range is often normal for you. Repeat testing over time is frequently more useful than any one number.
