What is this?

C-reactive protein (CRP) is made by the liver and released into the blood when there is inflammation anywhere in the body.

It's a very general signal. A raised CRP tells your clinician that something inflammatory is going on — an infection, an injury, recent surgery or a long-term inflammatory condition — but not what or where.

CRP changes fast: it can rise within hours of an infection starting and fall again quickly once it settles, which makes it useful for tracking how you're responding to treatment.

Why is it important?

Because CRP responds quickly, clinicians often use it to help judge how significant an illness is and whether it's improving.

It's almost never used alone — it's read alongside your symptoms, examination, and other tests such as a full blood count.

Where you'll see it: General blood panels, infection or inflammation work-ups, monitoring of long-term conditions.

How doctors use this result

Clinicians may use this result to:

  • Help judge whether an infection or inflammation is likely.
  • Track whether an illness is settling or worsening over days.
  • Monitor long-term inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
  • Support decisions about further tests or treatment.

What's the normal range?

Reference ranges vary between laboratories. Check your result against the reference range printed on your own blood test report. A result outside that range does not diagnose a condition by itself. Healthcare professionals interpret CRP alongside your symptoms, medical history and other test results.

High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP), sometimes used in cardiovascular risk assessment, is reported on a different, much finer scale and is not the same test.

Normal ranges are guides, not verdicts. Interpretation depends on your age, sex, symptoms, medical history, medications and other investigations — which is why your clinician looks at the whole picture rather than a single value.

Common reasons it may be high

  • Infection

    The immune response to bacteria or viruses drives the liver to release CRP quickly.

  • Injury or surgery

    Tissue damage triggers inflammation, so CRP often peaks a day or two afterwards.

  • Inflammatory conditions

    Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis keep inflammation — and CRP — persistently raised.

  • Ongoing low-grade inflammation

    Obesity, smoking and some long-term conditions can keep CRP mildly elevated.

Does an abnormal result always mean something is wrong?

Not necessarily. A number that sits outside the printed range is a prompt for interpretation — not a diagnosis.

  • A single result rarely gives the full picture — clinicians interpret it alongside your symptoms.
  • Your medical history, medications and other blood tests all shape the meaning of one value.
  • Small movements just outside the reference range are common and often not concerning.
  • Repeat testing over time is frequently more useful than any single number.

What might happen next?

  • A repeat CRP after a few days to see the direction of travel.
  • Other tests, such as a full blood count, to look for a cause.
  • Treatment of an identified infection or inflammatory condition.
  • A review of symptoms with your GP if CRP stays raised.

One result rarely tells the whole story. Clinicians look at your symptoms, medical history, medications and other tests together — and a single value that sits slightly outside the reference range is often normal for you. Repeat testing over time is frequently more useful than any one number.
